Motorola Moto G 3rd Gen Launched with 5-inch HD, 2GB RAM, 13MP Camera and Snapdragon 410

The hoopla around the upcoming Motorola devices seems to have finally settled after the company launched its iterative upgrade in G series, the Moto G 3rd gen at Rs 11,999 (~$185) for the 1GB RAM/8GB Storage and Rs 12,999 (~$203) for the 2GB RAM/16GB storage. Last couple of weeks have been full of Motorola leaks and rumors, and couple of days before we also saw a Moto G 2015 promotional video that left very little for imagination.

 

Disrupting the market with affordable produce has been Motorola’s forte, but all that seemed to have gone a bit offtrack (at least in India) with the launch of ultra affordable phones like Xiaomi Redmi 2 and Lenovo K3 Note which boasted of better specifications than the Moto E and the Moto G.

Moto G 2015 is propelled by the quad-core Snapdragon 410 SoC clocked at 1.4GHz which is a slight improvement over the Snapdragon 400 we saw on Moto G 2nd gen last year, and paired with 1GB/ 2GB RAM. The display comes in the form of a 5-inch HD screen.

Moto G 3rd gen has also evolved relatively on the camera front, which has been an achilles heel for the company in the past, and the latest Moto G is equipped with a 13-Megapixel primary sensor and a 5-Megapixel secondary sensor. The 13-Megapixel sensor is directly picketed from the Nexus 6 and the additional features like color balancing flash mark the changes on the camera front in the Moto G 2015.
The phone will run on Android Lollipop 5.1.1 and being a Moto device it wont be entertaining the hoard of preloaded third party apps like in other phones. Along with the Vanilla Android experience Motorola have also bundled some innovative features like Moto Display (Glance notification), Quick Capture (Seen on earlier Moto X) and the new chop twice feature which will switch on the LED flash with the chopping moment.

The design of the new Moto G 2015 is not drastically different but it does leave us impressed with the new added bits like the dual tone finish at the back and the freshly textures back panel. The Moto G 2015 comes with IPX7 certification which makes it water resistant when immersed up to three feet of deep water for a maximum of 30 minutes.

Moto G 2015 comes with a bumped up 2740mAh battery pack and features the usual set of connectivity features including 4G LTE.

Its not surprising that Motorola has introduced swappable rear panels for the Moto G 2015 but that being said the it is not clear if the company will be launching the Moto Maker feature for the Indian market. Moto G 2015 will be sold in Flipkart and the initial buyers stand a chance to win 100% cashback and 100 Moto G for Rs 1. Apart from these the other goodies include shopping vouchers, Wync subscription and a 4G enabled SIM from Airtel. Additionally Motorola will be sprucing up the offers with a exchange offer where in they will buy back any recent Moto devices and offer a discount.

The thing that boggles us down is the fact that Motorola is sticking up with a rather mediocre chipset in the form of Snapdragon 410 inspite of the specification rat race in the market. In all likelihood Motorola might have played safe by not opting for the Snapdragon 615 SoC which reportedly had heating issues in Xiaomi Mi 4i.  We fail to understand the reason logic behind the 1GB RAM/8GB storage variant which is priced just Rs 1000 less than the 2GB RAM/16GB storage version.
